Good photos, those with a burst of spontaneous liveliness in them, are often as much due to luck as to the skill of the photographer. This photo certainly fits into that category.
The Angel Building on the corner on Pentonville Road and St John Street has been going through a long process of refurbishment. First, they stripped it right down to the barest of bare bones; then they added new sections to it; and, finally, they are beginning to fix the exterior cladding. That is what is going on here.
As we came past this evening, this huge slab of glass, plastic and metal was hanging down from a tall crane and these men were gingerly manoeuvering it into place. An obvious enough subject for a photo but what lifts it out of the ordinary, for me at least, is that these two chaps saw me taking the photo and responded by giving me a cheerful wave.
This is one of those photos I feel privileged to have been able to take.
