Unfortunately, I left out the link to Gillards' Web page. I've put it in now. It explains that the shop was founded in 1886 and the photo suggests that it was a "proper" shop, rather than a market stall. The family seems to be local to Bath for at least a century.

The weather is not something we can do anything about. It's just there and we have to put up with it. Fortunately in towns, there is usually plenty of cover.

Gillards? Oh wow. You know I said I did family history, well that was one of the main names I was following - it was my mother's maiden name and because she was not married when she had me, also officially my name although I tended to use my father's name because my parents married soon after I was born and my sister had that name.

Well, well - I never knew the shop was there.

My family were from Devon.

Sorry about the rain but I think it was pretty widespread yesterday so you would have struggled to avoid it wherever you went.

It wasn't better, unfortunately. It rained on and off throughout. But you have to reckon with that at this time of year.

Well, the weather hasn't been great here today so I hope it was better where you were.

I love Bath. I am hoping that I will use it as a stop-off on my drive to Devon when my parents move down there next year. I have a friend who lives there who I never get to visit.

Have a lovely weekend

I like trams too and wish they would bring them back to London though I can imagine that finding room for them might be difficult.

I love the look of that tram; I don't know what it is about trams - perhaps that they actually go down real streets, unlike most trains, and you feel like you're really part of a town.

Yes, it arrived at 2:15. I will describe it in a post but suffice it to say that it has impressed me so far.

Vehicles can play havoc with electromagnetic devices because there are always electrical devices in them throwing off interference.

I once took a magnetic computer tape with me on the tube. It was data I needed for a project I was working on. No, it was fine, but after I had done this I was told that people had had such tapes wiped on the tube, though I was never able to discover for certain whether this was a true story or an urban myth.

I wonder if it arrived? I hope so.

I can see that having a wire would be a big pain. I had a similar problem with my Brompton bike. I keep a record of all the miles I cover by bike (to pat myself on the back really for showing how many miles I choose not to drive - sad innit!?) but I couldn't fit my old odometer to the Brompton bike cos the folding mechanism didn't allow for the wire. The new wireless one is splendid but if I take the bike on a train the odometer goes a bit crazy - it must pick up signals from something else. It once told me I had gone at 55mph (on a bike!!!).

Have fun with your new toy anyway. Hope it is easy to set up and works to your satisfaction.

It's not so much fortitude as accommodating to circumstances. During the working week we have a light breakfast and a light lunch and a more substantial evening meal, but when we are on holiday, we have breakfast in the hotel which is usually quite a big meal, so we often skip lunch or have it late in the afternoon.

Similarly, over the weekend, if we go out, we'll have a cafe breakfast which will set us up for the day and put off eating until we get home. Or maybe we'll have a toasted teacake or something while out.

There's nothing fixed about it. If there's a rule it would be "Eat if you're hungry and if you're not, don't!"

Oh I love the ladders in that restaurant. What a great idea.

But I am horrified that you went without lunch. I could never do that. My day has to be peppered with regular intakes of food or I am prone to passing out. It doesn't help me eat more if I miss a meal either (I've tried that when I've known I'm going to eat a lot of an evening) - I just end up feeling nauseous and unable to eat at all.

I admire your great fortitude. You would survive much better in the wild than I would!
