Blood and jet

By SilverTiger

Freya has gone off to the cattery, the packing is nearly done and tomorrow we depart.

Did you guess where we are going? There was only one comment but this hinted at a certain blood-thirsty character from literature: Count Dracula, forever associated with the Yorkshire town of Whitby.

Less gruesomely, Whitby is also known for the production of jewellery and objets d’art made of jet. Who knows, perhaps I will find a ring or bracelet to add to my collection.

Whitby will be our base and we will, as usual, tour around the region and see as much as we can. I have never been to this town, in modern times favoured by the Goth community, so I have no idea what to expect and, of course, have no pictures. Instead I will leave you with four images of Islington that I will be carrying with me in memory.

I noticed that in the picture of “The Cooperative Bank,” the sign on a building across the street says “OFFICES FOR RENT.” I remember seeing (and mis-reading) signs that said “TO LET” back in the ’70s. Has the Americanized “for rent” now replaced that in British usage?

We British like to ring the changes. Consistency is for people who lack imagination.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think you Americans got your language from us…

I hope you have a great time around Whitby; try and make it up to Staithes on the bus if you can – a very unpromising ‘top o’ town’ but wonderful at the bottom !

Oh fiddlesticks, you have gone now and I never wished you a happy holiday.

I love Whitby. I have only been once and it was a long time ago. But I do recall that the fish and chips were very good. I took a cat with me called Oliver and he escaped from the cottage where we were staying and we hunted for hours for him and I was grief-stricken thinking I had stupidly lost him forever. But he had smelled the fish and chips and was sat in the queue outside scrounging from the customers!!!

I don’t know about the fish and chips, being a veggie, but the rest of the place was fine.

Whitby was great as I hope will be apparent from my write-up. It’s one of the few places that I really want to go back to another time.
